On March 10, 2020, Governor DeSantis issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Florida due to the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak. On March 17, 2020, Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran announced that schools would continue with virtual instruction through at least April 15. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to escalate in the U.S. and Florida, raising numerous issues and unanswered questions. Both Florida Governor DeSantis and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have made it clear it is necessary to limit large gatherings to 50 people, regardless of their sponsorship or purpose.
SkillsUSA Florida remains committed to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of its members. Therefore, we regret to inform you that the 2020 SkillsUSA Florida State Leadership and Skills Conference in Pensacola, FL has been canceled. The decision to cancel events was a difficult one. Careful consideration was given to the possibility of alternative contest formats, but ultimately the SkillsUSA Florida Board of Directors has determined that it is not in the best interest of our students.
We recognize this is not an ideal situation, but the safety and well-being of members, advisors, volunteers, and staff is our top priority. We echo the advice of Governor DeSantis and the Florida Department of Health in asking all Floridians to engage in and promote the practice of everyday preventive actions, such as social distancing and proper handwashing and sanitation practices.
We thank you for your patience while we process the details. As more information becomes available, we will provide updates through the Tuesday Times, our website, and social media channels. Thank you for your continued service to our students. If you have questions or feedback, please email email@example.com.
